Lecture: Gold, Power and Architecture in Colonial Minas Gerais
When:
-
Where:
Museu do Diamante, Diamantina, MG, Lecture Hall
A public lecture examining how the 18th-century diamond and gold mining economy shaped the architecture, social hierarchy, and urban planning of towns across Minas Gerais. The speaker will draw on examples from the museum's own collection of over 2,500 items, including mining equipment, religious art, and domestic objects from the diamond district era. The Museu do Diamante, established in 1954, occupies a building that once served as a residence for diamond inspectors. The talk connects the material culture of the mining period to the UNESCO-listed heritage townscape of Diamantina. Open to the public. No registration required.
